Tips for Looking After Your Pet on Bonfire Night

How to Look After Your Pets During Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night (5th November) is a much-anticipated celebration filled with fireworks and festivities. However, for our furry friends, the loud noises and bright lights can be overwhelming. Here’s how to ensure your pets stay safe and calm during the excitement.

1. Create a Safe Space: Designate a quiet room or area in your home where your pet feels secure. Fill it with their favourite toys, bedding, and perhaps some treats. Ensure the windows are closed to muffle the sounds from outside.

2. Use Soothing Sounds: Playing calming music or turning on the TV can help drown out the noise of fireworks. There are even playlists and apps specifically designed to soothe pets.

3. Keep Them Indoors: Make sure your pets are indoors well before the fireworks start. Whilst this can be tricky to manage at times (especially with outdoor cats), keeping them indoors can prevent them from getting scared and running away in panic. Again, double-check that all doors and windows are securely closed.

4. Comfort Them Without Overdoing It: While it’s important to comfort your pet if they’re frightened, try not to reinforce their anxiety. Stay calm and act normally; your pet will take cues from your behavior.

5. Distract with Toys and Treats: Engage your pets with interactive toys or their favourite treats. This can help divert their attention away from the noise and provide mental stimulation.

6. Consider Calming Products: There are various calming products for cats, dogs, and small animals available, such as anxiety wraps, pheromone diffusers, and natural remedies. You can consult your vet to find the best option for your pet.

7. Keep a Routine: We all know that fireworks aren't set off purely on Bonfire Night. It is likely that fireworks will be ongoing in the evenings the week before and after the 5th November. Try to stick to your pet’s regular routine as much as possible. Consistency can be comforting and help reduce stress.

8. ID and Microchip: In case your pet does manage to escape in a panic, having up-to-date ID tags and a microchip will increase the chances of a safe return.

Bonfire Night can be a stressful time for pets, but with a bit of preparation and care, you can help them stay calm and secure. By creating a safe environment, providing distractions, and using calming techniques, you can ensure your furry friends remain happy and relaxed throughout the celebrations.
