During the 1940s, a chap called Edward Lowe discovered that granulated clay absorbed moisture and trapped bad odours. More importantly, cats didn’t track the clay through the house afterwards. Lowe spotted a business opportunity, filled five-pound bags with his granulated clay, and branded it “kitty litter.”
