The Dos and Don'ts of Having Pets Around at Christmas

The Dos and Don'ts of Having Pets Around at Christmas

Ensuring a safe and enjoyable Christmas for your furry friends involves a bit of planning and awareness. Here’s a handy guide to the dos and don'ts of having pets around at Christmas.

DOs:

1. Do create a safe space: Designate a quiet area where your pet can retreat if the festivities become overwhelming. This helps reduce stress and provides them with a sense of security. Consider having some stress diffusers in place for some anxiety relief for your pet.

2. Do secure your Christmas tree: Ensure your Christmas tree is stable and secure to prevent it from toppling over if your pet decides to investigate (because of course it will!). Additionally, make sure there are no low-hanging baubles that could become playthings for your cats or get smashed easily.

3. Do Use Pet-Safe Decorations: Similarly, opt for shatterproof ornaments, and avoid using tinsel in reachable places, which can be harmful if ingested. LED lights are cooler and safer for pets than traditional bulbs.

4. Do Keep Toxic Foods Out of Reach: Many Christmas foods, such as chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, and alcohol, are toxic to pets. Make sure these items are stored safely out of their reach and not included in any scraps you give them.

5. Do Provide Pet-Friendly Treats: Include your pets in the Christmas fun by giving them special, safe treats. There are many festive flavoured pet treats available that are both delicious and safe. Shop cat treats and dog treats here.

DON'Ts:

1. Don't Ignore Signs of Stress: Loud noises, unfamiliar guests, and changes in environment can be stressful for pets. Look for signs of anxiety, such as hiding, excessive barking, or changes in behaviour, and take steps to comfort them. You can read this blog for some safety tips regarding pet anxiety relief.

2. Don't Leave Gift Wrapping Unsupervised: Ribbon, string, and wrapping paper can pose choking hazards if your pet decides to play with them. Clean up promptly after unwrapping gifts, and opt for appropriate toys instead. Shop our range of cat toys and dog toys

3. Don't Leave Fireplaces and Candles Unattended: Pets are naturally curious, and an open flame can be dangerous. Keep a close eye on them and consider using battery-operated candles instead.

4. Don't Forget About Hydration: With all the holiday excitement, hydration is easy to overlook. Ensure your pet always has access to fresh water, especially if they're active or in a warm environment. A water fountain is a good option for both cats and dogs.

By following these dos and don'ts, you can ensure that your pet has a safe, stress-free, and joyful Christmas. Including your pets in the holiday celebrations enhances the season’s magic, making it a truly special time for your entire family.
